Grimwade was first apprenticed to London Druggists, but was recalled to the family pharmaceutical firm Felton Grimwade & Company before he could attain his pharmacy qualification. He completed his apprenticeship in Melbourne, receiving the Australian College of Pharmacy's President's Prize.

He was admitted as a Partner in Felton Grimwade in 1889. A leader within Melbourne's business community, Grimwade became President of the Chamber of Commerce in 1912. He was also Chairman of several companies, including Cuming Smith & Company, J Bosisto & Company, Australian Glass Manufacturers and its successor ACI. He became the first Chairman of Drug Houses of Australia.

Grimwade served as Chairman of the Felton Bequests Committee for 35 years, approving charitable grants and art acquisitions for the National Gallery of Victoria. Among his personal contributions was the donation of the Phelia Grimwade House to Melbourne Girls Grammar School and the donation by the four Grimwade brothers of their family home 'Harleston' to Melbourne Grammar School.

Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas.
