He served in France and the Middle East during the First World War, being wounded on one occasion and promoted to the rank of Major.

After the war he joined his father's medical practice in St Kilda. With Lord Somers, then Governor of Victoria, he co-founded the Lord Somers Camp in 1929. The Camp brought together young men from different walks of life, promoting better understanding of each other and building leadership skills.

McAdam was Camp Chief for the next 25 years and President of "Power House". There he sponsored and assisted camp members who wished to join the army. McAdam was also active in the Scout movement and the YMCA. He was noted for his remarkable memory and skills as an orator.
