A fine theological scholar and Pastor, Bishop John McKie was a senior figure in the Anglican Church. McKie first studied at The University of Melbourne. After receiving the Lucas-Tooth Scholarship he read theology at the University of Oxford's New College. He was ordained a Deacon and Priest before graduating with a Master of Arts in 1935.

During the Second World War McKie served in the Middle East and New Guinea as Army Chaplain, then Senior Chaplain, receiving mention in despatches. He was inducted to the Cure of Christ Church South Yarra, where he is remembered for his clear and erudite sermons.

In 1946 McKie was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Melbourne and granted the title Bishop of Geelong, reputedly becoming the youngest Bishop in the Anglican Communion. At this time he also became the first Chairman of the Council of St Catherine's School in Toorak. McKie was later appointed Archdeacon of Melbourne and Chaplain and Sub-Prelate of the Venerable Order of St John of Jerusalem.

In 1960 he became Assistant Bishop of Coventry, a position he held for 20 years. During his time in England he also served as Vicar of Berkswell and as Vicar of Great Packington and Little Packington.

McKie returned to Melbourne upon his retirement in 1982.

Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas.

The above profile was included in the Talents Committed Exhibition in 2008.
