Senior School Oval, Term III, 01 August 2024 – 13 August 2024

Site establishment by the builder commenced Term III 2024. The first stage was to erect fencing and hoardings to safely segregate the site from School activities, and to begin installation of the temporary classroom facilities that will be used during construction.

Partial occupation of the Domain Road footpath along the northern boundary of the School has been approved by City of Melbourne Council. Solid protection hoarding and scaffold installations along our northern boundary have been successfully completed, ensuring the unimpeded and safe passage of pedestrians.

Transition to our temporary facilities took place during the 2024 September holidays. As of Term IV 2024, these demountable classrooms are being used to provide high quality learning spaces, at an improved standard compared to the buildings being replaced.

All trial and end of year examinations for Year 12 students were held in The Old Melburnians War Memorial Hall and selected rooms, well away from any disruption caused by construction.

Internal strip out and structure demolition of Rhoden and Neill buildings has been completed.

The School has both vibration and noise monitors in place, with regular testing to ensure we are limiting potential impact to school operations, adjacent heritage buildings and importantly student activities.

Did you know?

Melbourne Grammar School has a rich history, and with it a proud sense of responsibility when it comes to preservation.

As part of the new Centre for Humanities development, the Chapel Square will be refurbished, but most affected will be the bluestone wall which currently runs across Domain Road, intersecting with the Chapel Square.

Courtesy of a Heritage Victoria listing and approved permit, the original bluestone wall (part of the 1904 gymnasium toilet block) will be carefully dismantled and rebuilt alongside the new Centre.

Heritage Victoria approved stonemasons have already begun the incredibly detailed process of surveying, recording, categorising, and storing each individual bluestone block. When the construction progress allows for the wall to be reinstated, the wall will take about a month to be carefully restored.
