Classroom teacher and boarding house tutor

Helping others has always been important to me. Before I decided to become a teacher, I considered the idea of working as a paramedic. When I was a student myself I always enjoyed school—my teachers, friends, and the structure it provided. I knew teaching would suit my personality, and I’m really proud to be able to teach at Melbourne Grammar.

I think I have the passion, time and skills to make students thrive to ensure their schooling makes them feel the same positive experience as I had at school. I base both my teaching and tutor roles on a service model which promotes the notion of serving others and the community before oneself.

This is a school that invests in its teachers. This is my twelfth year at Grimwade House, and throughout that time, I’ve been given so many opportunities to refine my skills as a teacher. I have attended a conference in Montreal, been given a bursary to complete a Master of Literacy Education, and I’ve now been given a new opportunity to work the in the boarding house as a Year 10 Perry House tutor.

Melbourne Grammar School prioritises strong connections between students and teachers because we know when a student feels happy and safe, they are in the best position to learn. As soon as students have a sense of trust in me, they’re usually willing try new things and move outside their comfort zones.

At Grimwade House, our focus is always on building and maintaining relationships. My colleagues are supportive and collaborative, and we’re constantly cheering each other on. Primary school should be fun for students. My team and I are constantly trying to engage the students with the curriculum we have been given. I’m very lucky I work alongside creative, intelligent and humorous colleagues which makes being at work a pleasure.

When my students do try that new activity and hit the next milestone, it gives me a huge sense of satisfaction. Whether they’re improving their maths skills, making new friends, or have achieved something that’s special to them, it’s a great feeling to see their progress. I even find myself enjoying report writing for that reason—it’s a chance to reflect on their growth, and on the difference I’ve made.
