I love nothing more than bringing people to Melbourne Grammar School who I believe will work well here, supporting what we’re aiming to create and continue. I take great satisfaction in helping to place the right person to the roles we have available.

After people have been here for a while, I’ll often check in with them to ask how they’re finding it. In the teaching space, without exception, teachers love working here. That relates to the support they receive professionally, the collegiality between staff members, and the relationships they have with the students, which are both respectful and two-way.

There’s such a diverse range of employment opportunities here for general staff, along with all the facilities and access to technology they need to do their best work. I keep their needs at the forefront of my mind because without our general staff, teachers would find it hard to do what they need to do.

It’s my experience that if you have a passion for a particular area, that’s supported and valued here. Even in areas such as grounds management or catering, staff have the tools and team members around them to feel a great sense of satisfaction with their work.

When people ask me what it’s like to work at Melbourne Grammar I talk about the requirement for excellence. I think the people who choose to work here are looking for the opportunity to operate at that highly professional level, with the right support, and the intrinsic rewards that come from that.

I have worked in schools where management and staff are quite distinct, but I don’t see that division here. There’s a great deal of support for staff, including during those times when people are facing personal challenges. That level of support is something I haven’t seen in any other place I’ve worked.

Helen Voogt-Dillon joined Melbourne Grammar School in 2012 as the School’s inaugural Director of Human Resources. This followed roles in education and management consulting, as well as an early career in banking and finance.
