A highly successful businessman and world champion rower, Andrew Michelmore has also been an active supporter of community organisations. Michelmore studied mechanical engineering at The University of Melbourne before joining ICI Engineering in 1975.

He was awarded a Victorian Rhodes Scholarship in 1976 and went on to the University of Oxford, where he studied politics, philosophy and economics. An outstanding rower, Michelmore represented Australia at the World Rowing Championships in 1974, 1975 and 1979. As a member of the Lightweight Coxless Fours he won a Gold Medal in 1974 and a Bronze Medal the following year. He was stroke for the Oxford Crew that won the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race in 1977 and 1978 and was President of the Oxford University Boat Club.

After demonstrating his leadership abilities as General Manager of Nabalco he was appointed General Manager of Western Mining Corporation. In 2002 he became Chief Executive Officer of WMC Resources. There he oversaw improvements in the company's performance before its acquisition by BHP Billiton in 2005. Michelmore was then Chief Executive Officer of En, where he managed energy, power and aluminium assets.

Recently he has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the zinc and lead miner Zinifex. Michelmore has served as Senior Vice-Chairman of the Minerals Council of Australia and as Chairman of the CSIRO Mineral Resources Sector Advisory Committee. He has also been Director and Chair of the Clunies Ross Foundation, an organisation that advances the communication and application of science.

A supporter of not for profit organisations, he has chaired the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women's Health and Melbourne's Ormond College Council.


Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas.
