Fergus takes world title

Year 12 student, Fergus Hamilton, has been crowned world champion in the Men's Double Sculls event.

2017 Captain of Boats, Fergus Hamilton, is a world champion rower. Together with Cormac Kennedy-Leverett from The Southport School in Queensland, he has won a gold medal in Junior Men’s Double Sculls at the 2017 World Junior Rowing Championships.

Melbourne Grammar School’s Director of Rowing, Tom Abramowski, coached the pair to their victory.

Despite recording the fastest time in the semi-finals, Fergus (stroke) and Cormac (bow) were not the favourites to win. Germany had this distinction. This did not deter the Australian pair who led the field early in the 2000m race and held onto it until the end. Finishing in a time of 6:34.05, they were 1:38.06 ahead of their nearest rivals, Greece, at the end. Germany placed third.

Fergus and Cormac were the youngest crew on the water and, given their ages, will be eligible for the event again next year.

The 2017 World Junior Rowing Championships were held in Lithuania during early August.

The Melbourne Grammar School community congratulates Fergus, Cormac, and Tom on their outstanding achievement.
