Annual Scholarship Exam: Frequently Asked Questions

Page Content

Can we still apply for scholarship if we’ve already accepted an offer?

Yes. Your son may apply for a scholarship if he has accepted a place at the School.

Does the School provide the scholarship exam results?

Melbourne Grammar School does not release scholarship examination results. All results remain the property of the School.

Our Permanent Residency Visa/Citizenship has not yet been granted. Can we apply?

Unfortunately not. Applicants must hold Australian citizenship or Permanent Residency (PR) status at the time of registration, noting that applications close on Thursday 20 August, and may close early if capacity is reached.

Please note that Student (subclass 500) visa holders and Temporary Resident visa holders are not eligible to apply.

Should I apply for an Academic Scholarship?

Academic Scholarships are designed for students performing consistently at the highest level of their cohort.

As a guide, this typically includes students achieving “Exceeding” in NAPLAN and demonstrating above or well above standard achievement in school reports.

If my son is not yet meeting the academic criteria, should we still apply?

If your son is not yet performing at this level, we encourage you to consider alternative entry pathways.

Has the Scholarship Exam date changed?

Yes. The timing of the Scholarship Examination has recently been adjusted.

The examination is now held approximately 18 months prior to entry, with Year 7 applicants sitting the exam in Year 5 and Year 9 applicants in Year 7.

Previously, the examination was held one year prior to entry.

When will scholarship registrations close?

Scholarship registrations for Year 7 and Year 9 entry in 2028 are now closed.

Can I apply for the scholarship for other year levels?

Academic and Music Scholarships are offered via the annual Scholarship Examination for entry into Year 7 and Year 9 only.

How many scholarships are awarded each year?

Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster and vary from year to year. As such, this information is not publicly disclosed.

What is the remission percentage of a scholarship?

Scholarship remission levels are not publicly disclosed. Scholarships provide partial remission of tuition fees, with the exact amount being dependent on the applicant, family circumstances, and availability of funding.

Where appropriate, offered families may be invited to complete formal means-testing to assess financial need.

Can I only apply for Music Scholarship?

All applicants must sit the Academic Scholarship Examination to be considered for a Music Scholarship.

Auditions are then offered to selected candidates demonstrating both strong academic performance and musical ability.

What are the requirements for the Music Scholarship audition?

Shortlisted candidates will be allocated 15 minutes for warm-up and 15 minutes for performance.

If multiple instruments are played, the School will nominate the preferred instrument. At least one piece must include piano accompaniment.

Are there Boarding Scholarships available?

Yes. Boarding Scholarships are available for students living regionally, rurally, or interstate. Further information can be found here.

What other scholarships do you have available?

The School also offers General Excellence Scholarships to Year 7-11 students. Further information can be found online here. Applications open the year prior to entry.

Is it possible to sit for the exam remotely?

No. All applicants are required to sit the Scholarship Examination in person at Melbourne Grammar School on Saturday 29 August 2026.

When will we find out if we have an interview?

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by phone approximately three weeks after the Scholarship Examination.

All other applicants will be notified of the outcome by email approximately one month after the examination.
