Performing Arts

For students who love theatre, Senior School brings diverse and exciting ways to develop their passion, both on stage and behind the scenes.

Senior School offers a wide range of opportunities for students to complement their academic studies through the performing arts co-curricular programme. Opportunities for musical and dramatic performance abound, from orchestral concerts to musical productions. The Theatresports House competition, where improvised theatre is played as a spectator sport, gives students and opportunity to extend their dramatic and comedic skills while providing entertainment.

Each year four productions created with Melbourne Girls Grammar give actors, singers and dancers opportunities to showcase their skills, while students interested in the backstage and technical aspects gain sound and lighting experience, as well as confidence and management skills.

For those who love theatre, Senior School brings diverse and exciting ways to develop their passion, both on stage and behind the scenes.

There are three major theatre productions every year, all performed with girls from Melbourne Girls Grammar School.

The Quad Play

Usually Shakespeare, sometimes classical, this production is performed with students from Years 9-12.

Acted at night under lights in the open air picturesque bluestone quadrangle, this setting creates a magical atmosphere for live theatre and is a perfect way to kick start the Melbourne Grammar School theatrical calendar.

Recent productions have include Twelfth Night, The Bacchae, As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet.

The August Production

Performed in the historic Old Melburnians War Memorial Hall with state of the art theatrical facilities including motorised fly-lines, expanded wing-space and refurbished dressing rooms. This production is open to students from Years 9 to 12 and offers an exciting and diverse range of plays and musicals for young performers to develop their talents and enhance their skills.

Opportunities are also available for students who prefer production - lighting, sound, stage crew and set construction. These students acquire a thorough understanding of theatre and play an integral role in the success of every production.

Recent productions include My Fair Lady, West Side Story and The Producers.

The Spring Production

Open to Year 9 and 10 students only. This is an exciting opportunity for students to perform in one of Melbourne’s premiere theatres, The Coopers Malthouse.

This collaboration with The Coopers Malthouse is in its fourth year and gives students a valuable and unforgettable professional theatrical experience.

Recent productions include Rhinoceros, Sweeney Todd, Spurboard, The Small Poppies and Animal Farm.
