Isham Garran

Sir Peter Garran was a highly respected diplomat in the British Foreign Service and Chairman of the Fairbanks Society. Garran graduated with first class honours in Greek, Latin and Philosophy from The University of Melbourne.

In 1934 he entered the British Foreign Service and within a decade had reached the position of First Secretary. During the Second World War Garran held diplomatic positions in Belgrade and Lisbon. He was then in London for three years before being posted to Berlin during the time of the Soviet Union's Berlin Blockade.

In the 1950s he served in The Hague, London and Washington. Garran was British Ambassador to Mexico in 1960 and Ambassador to the Netherlands in 1964. He was honoured as a Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George for his services to the Commonwealth.

He later took up several business positions, including as a Director of Lend Lease Corporation and of the AMP Society. He was Chairman of the Quality Assurance Council of the British Standards Institution. Garran was also Chairman of the Fairbanks Society, in which role he assisted England's poor and disadvantaged to get a start in life.


Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas.
